Question from Maddie - What do Scottish people eat on a daily basis?

The Scots are great soup lovers. The infamous Scotch Broth is a rich, barley and vegetable soup, and in days gone by, some would eat it as a main meal. It's a highly nourishing soup and is eaten most during Scottish winters.  It's sometimes called Barley Broth soup.  Cock-a-leekie is another popular favourite. A delicious soup made from leeks, with the cock being the chicken portion of the recipe.

Many of the recipes have been borne of the country's climate. Scottish cooking leans towards recipes that will provide warmth, strength and good sustenance. Hence, potatoes, or tatties, are a mainstay of the Scottish diet. And Scots adore their bread, in all shapes and sizes.

Many mutton recipes sprang into being due to the great number of sheep that appeared in the Highlands. Shepherd's/Cottage pie is a favourite amongst young and old - minced lamb/beef  topped with potatoes (and cheese if enjoyed). Notice the lack of pork in old Scottish cookbooks. The earlier Scots apparently didn't enjoy pork very much.

Seafood is a staple part of the Scottish diet - from salmon, trout, herrings, crab and prawns. The Arbroath Smokie is a classic example. You can see the infamous Smokie at the following link - Arbroath Smokies.   The Smokie is the prime ingredient of the Arbroath Toastie.

The Scots are well-known for having a sweet tooth. Shortbread, scones, fudge, toffee and the deliciously crumbly Edinburgh Rock are just a few of the treats eaten daily. Not to mention our love of all flavours of ice-cream.
