Ellisland Farm was the home of the Scottish poet Robert Burns from 1788 to 1791. He was offered the farm from Patrick Millar, his landlord.
He agreed to accept because it was a “poet’s choice”. He felt it was the only farm where he could draw inspiration to write, as the other farms he’d visited lacked soul.
His time at the farm proved to be one of his most productive. He wrote some of his finest songs and poems here - Tam O'Shanter and Auld Lang Syne being just two.
Ellisland Farm - Robert Burns
Ellisland Farm is now a popular museum and visitor attraction. It provides a fascinating insight into the life of Robert Burns on the farm in the 1700’s.
You may enjoy guided tours of Ellisland farmhouse and museum where you will be able to view the original writings and possessions of Robert Burns.
After your visit, you may enjoy a stroll along the Burns Walk beside the River Nith near Dumfries. There is an idyllic walk along the river to Frairs Carse for a wee dram of whisky, and nature trails with panoramic views.
