Floors Castle is situated to the north of the Borders town of Kelso, and is home to the Duke and Duchess of Roxburghe. The name Floors is derived from the French Fleurs.
William Adam was commissioned by the 1st Duke of Roxburghe in 1721 to create the plain, neo-classical Georgian country house. Each Duke made their own mark on the castle by adding extensions, east and west wings.
Floors Castle is the largest inhabited caste in Scotland today. It is a private ancestral home, but several of the fabulous State rooms are now open to the public through the summer months. There are collections of French 17th and 18th Century furniture on display. You may view fine works of art including masterpieces by Picasso, Matisse and Augustus John.
The dining room has numerous glass cabinets displaying gold-rimmed dinner services, exquisite tea-sets, Chinese and Dresden porcelain, crystal glasses and silver
teapots, all beautifully preserved.
