J M Barrie, the creator of Peter Pan, was born in Kirriemuir in 1860.
His father, David Barrie, a handloom weaver, and his mother, Margaret Ogilvy, had a large family of ten children. J M was the ninth child born.
The upper floor of the house is furnished as it may have been when Barrie lived there. An exhibition called The Genius of J M Barrie about his theatrical and literary achievements is housed in the adjacent house, No 11. The outside wash-house is said to have been his first theatre.
Kirriemuir Camera Obscura
J M Barrie was given the freedom of Kirriemuir in 1930. He presented the town with the cricket pavilion on Kirrie Hill, and the Camera Obscura within. It is one of only three in the country and the views from the top are astounding.
There is a garden with a living-willow crocodile and a Pirates Workshop for children. You may buy J M Barrie souvenirs and books. A self-service tearoom and picnic area is available.
