The steam and diesel hauled trains travel to Torosay where you can visit the Scottish Baronial Torosay Castle and its twelve acres of beautiful gardens and woodland walks. Duart Castle, the ancestral home of the Clan MacLean, is nearby and may be reached by a three mile long footpath from Torosay.
Duart Castle dates back to the 13th Century. It was attacked in 1647 and laid siege to by the Argyll government troops of Clan Campbell. But they were defeated and driven off by the Royalist troops of Clan MacLean. The castle was abandoned in 1751. Sir Fitzroy Donald Maclean, the 26th Chief of the Clan MacLean bought it in 1911 and it has since been restored.
The train journey moves alongside the Sound of Mull where you can enjoy extensive views of the Glencoe Hills, Ben Nevis, the island of Lismore and Ben Cruachan.
