Newark Castle is situated on the south shore of the estuary of the River Clyde in Port Glasgow, Inverclyde.

The shipyards which stood beside the castle were removed around the 1980s.  Newly landscaped areas appeared to the east of Newark Castle and opened up scenic views of the castle and across the Clyde.

The castle was built in 1478 by George Maxwell when he inherited the Barony of Finlanstone. All that remains of the outer defensive wall is from one of the original corner towers. It is believed that a hall, a bake-house and a brew house would have present inside the walled enclosure.

Original gatehouse, tower house and corner tower
Patrick Maxwell inherited the castle in the late 16th century. He expanded the building by constructing a new north range, which replaced the earlier hall in the form of a three storey Renaissance mansion in 1597.

At the same time, the barmkin wall was destroyed except for the north east tower.  It was converted into a doocot - a dovecote.  The mansion has features of the Scottish baronial style - crow-stepped gables and corners embellished with corbelled turrets.

The Mansion House
The Glasgow authorities purchased eighteen acres of land surrounding Newark Castle from the then laird Sir George Maxwell  in 1668.  They developed the harbour into the place now known as Port Glasgow.

The last Maxwell died in 1694 and it led to the castle having a number of non-resident owners.
