The Loch Garten Osprey Centre is situated on a nature reserve in the Abernethy forest. It overlooks the nest of these beautiful fish-eating birds.
The ospreys returned to breed in Scotland over fifty years ago, and they chose Loch Garten as the ideal place to live and breed. The area boasts the largest remnant of the ancient Caledonian pinewood in Britain.
Over two million people have visited Loch Garten to see the birds. There is a combination of telescopes, binoculars, CCTV cameras and expert staff to help you enjoy the sight of these Scottish birds.

Ospreys happily use specially made nesting platforms and many of these sites are in regular use in Scotland. If the ospreys fail to breed successfully, they often start to build a new nest known as a frustration eyrie. They may use such a nest for breeding the following year.
The Osprey Watch is suitable for all ages. It is only a short walk along a firm, flat track through the native Scottish pinewoods to the visitor centre and shop.

You can explore longer trails that you can use to explore the surrounding forest. You will see a variety of Scottish wildlife including red squirrels, crested tits, dragonflies, and crossbills.
The Loch Garten Osprey Centre opens at dawn each spring from April to mid-May. This is to enable people to see capercaillie during the lek - their breeding time. The capercaillie is a large woodland grouse that spends most of its time feeding on the ground. It may also be found in trees as it feeds on shoots in the pinewood.
