Quiraing is located in the north-east of the island of Skye, north of Portree, on the Trotternish Peninsula. It is a landslip on the eastern face of Meall na Suiramach.
The length of the Trotternish Ridge escarpment was formed by a great series of landslips. The Quiraing is the only part of the slip that is still moving. The road at its base regularly requires repairs due to this fact.
The Isle of Skye stretches over sixty miles in length, with several hundred miles of indented coastline, As with man y areas in Scotland, its beauty is derived from its geology. The Quirang, The Old Man of Storr and Kilt Rock are among some of the scenic highlights.
So diverse are the landmarks that they have achieved different names. The Needle is a jagged one hundred and twenty foot high pinnacle, and is a remnant of land-slipping. The Table is northwest of the Needle. It is a flat grassy area which slipped down from the summit plateau. It has vistas of the Torridon Hills and the mountains of Wester Ross. To the southwest is the Prison, a pyramidal rocky peak.
The Storr is a result of the Trotternish land-slip. The area in front of the cliffs of the Storr is called the Sanctuary. The Storr has a number of oddly shaped rock pinnacles, and these are the remains of ancient volcanic plugs. The Old Man of Storr is one of the most renowned.
