West Highland Sailing is situated at the Laggan Locks, Spean Bridge, Fort William. It is close by to the Caledonian Canal, and offers you the opportunity to cruise the beautiful waterway. The large fleet comprises of sailing yachts and luxury motor cruisers.
With simple navigation and no tides to encounter, even novices can charter the boats. All yachts can be hired per week. Mid-week and weekend short breaks are available, except in July and August.
The yachts offer good handling together with excellent performance. All yachts are fin-keeled for superior sailing, and have roller-reefing Genoa and slab reefing mainsails. They are all equipped with diesel engines. You start your cruise at the base at Laggan Locks. Laggan Locks is a flight of two locks that connects the Laggan Avenue with Ceann Loch. There are toilet & shower facilities, drinking water and pump out facilities available.
The canal passes the site of a clan battle at Loch Lochy's north-eastern end. The battle is known as the Battle of the Shirts, Battle of Blar na Leine. It happened in the summer of 1544 as the MacDonalds, MacDonnells and Camerons fought the Frasers and a small number of Grants.
The interiors of the vessels are designed to be practical both under sail and when moored. They all have a well-fitted galley, but the YCA29 and Sigma yachts have cold water only. The Moody 28 has hot water and heating.
The safety equipment inventories are in conjunction with Royal Yachting Association standards. The equipment includes buoyancy aids for each crew member, anchor and chain, flares, lifebelt, maps and general cruising information. Novice sailors will receive as much tuition as is required before starting the journey. A non-refundable damage waiver of £25 is charged, plus a £20 deposit against the cost of fuel used.
