A Communication  Genius

Alexander Graham Bell was born in Edinburgh on 3rd March 1847.  His invention of the telephone happened when he attempting to provide a device to help the deaf.  He patented his early telephone in February 1876. However, it wasn't until 10th March 1876 that the famous words "Mr Watson, come here, I want you" were transmitted by telephone.  He attended universities in Edinburgh and London before emigrating to Canada in 1870.  He attained the post of Professor of Vocal Physiology at Boston.  He created the Bell Telephone company in 1877 and soon became a rich man.

But despite his wealth, he continued to teach and Helen Keller, renowned for her own work, was one of his pupils. His father and grandfather had been involved in elocution and refining systems of communication for the deaf.  Both Bell's mother and wife were deaf and this profoundly affected his work.

Bell continued to work on inventions including a universal phonetic language, hydrofoils and a phonograph.  He was involved in genetics and discovered a new method of sheep breeding.  He became one of the founding members of the National Geographic Society in 1888.

Surprisingly, Bell never liked his most famous invention, saying "I never use the beast".  He stuffed the bell on his phone with newspapers, as he considered it an intrusion on his work. He died in Nova Scotia, Canada on 2nd August 1922 at the age of seventy-five.
