Apples

Apples were a favourite form of divination. One would sit alone in front of a mirror at midnight, cut an apple into nine pieces, stand with your back to the mirror, point each of eight pieces towards the left shoulder and then eat them.  You then threw the ninth piece over your left shoulder.  As you turned the head to the left, an image of the future husband or wife would appear in the mirror.

Eggs

Eggs were used for divination. The first-laid egg of a pullet was thought of as giving the best results combined with fresh springwater.  An egg white was dropped into a glass of water then a mouthful taken without swallowing.  You then went out for a walk. The first name that you heard would be the name of your future spouse - hopefully not 'Rough Hamish' or such like.

Nuts

Nuts were thought to have extra powers. It was common to burn them in a fire.  Two were chosen to represent a lad and a lass. If they burned quietly together, all would be well.  But if they split, true love would be anything but smooth.
