The Loch Ness Monster is one of the best known creatures in the world.  Nessie, as she is affectionately called by her admiring believers is, however, an elusive creature.  She has been sighted very rarely and is notoriously camera-shy.  She lives in one of the voluminous freshwater lochs in Great Britain, Loch Ness.

Most scientists and other experts are highly skeptical of the creature's existence.  They dismiss the noted sightings as deliberate hoaxes or misidentification of known creatures or natural phenomena.  The most common eyewitness description of Nessie is that of a plesiosaur.

The plesiosaur is a long-necked aquatic reptile that became extinct during the Cretaceous-Tertiary period.  The supporters of the plesiosaur theory cite the survival of a fish called the coelacanth. It was assumed to have gone extinct along with the plesiosaur until it was rediscovered off the coast of Madagascar in 1938.
