John Dewar built the Aberfeldy Distillery in Perth in the late 1800’s. He is attributed with the honour of being the first man to produce and sell a Blend whisky. His product proved to be highly successful on the consumer market. Whisky means Water of Life and is from the Gaelic language. Water of Life in Gaelic is uisge beatha.
After John Dewar died, his sons Alexander and Thomas grasped the reins of the Dewar Whisky business. Thomas out of the two sons was the one who made the name of Dewar known worldwide. By 1894, he had established thirty-two agents in twenty-six countries.

The Aberfeldy Distillery has provided excellent work opportunities, with as many as twenty-four employees working there at its peak. Present day employment has twenty-one people working there, including visitor guides. Distillery workers still inhabit the five houses that were built nearby in the 1920's.
