Edinburgh Castle is a majestic landmark which dominates the capital city's skyline. It is perched on an extinct volcano and is part of Edinburgh's World Heritage site. Human habitation of the site is dated back as far as the 9th century.
As with most castles, Edinburgh's fortress has been a centre of military activity. The castle is one of the few that still has a military garrison, though this is mostly for ceremonial purposes. There are two cafes and restaurants in the castle.
There are numerous historical displays, and an educational centre in the castle which runs events for schools and educational groups. Re-enactors in costume and with period weaponry offer historical displays.The key features of the Castle include-
St Margaret's Chapel - Edinburgh's oldest building which dates from the 1100's.
The
Great Hall with its stunning hammerbeam roof built by James IV.
Crown Square - the principal courtyard which was developed in the 15th century.
The Half Moon Battery created in the late 16th century.
The Scottish National War Memorial added after the First World War.
Opening Hours Summer 9.30am - 6pm 1st April to 30 September Winter 9.30am - 5pm 1st October to 31st March
Closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Open on 1st and 2nd January.
