James Logie Baird

James Logie Baird (1888-1946) is often seen as a failed pioneer after the Marconi system won the contract from the BBC for general broadcasting. However Baird was a true pioneer in that he was the first person to produce a live televison picture.  He did this by using a better photoelectric cell and improving the signal conditioning from the photocell to the video amplifier.

St Andrew

St Andrew became the patron saint of Scotland in the middle of the 10th century. Several legends state that the relics of Andrew were brought under supernatural guidance from Constantinople to the place where the modern town of St. Andrews stands today.

Scotland in Film

You might think it would be hard to write an article about Scottish films, but in fact the contribution Scotland has made to the world of film has been almost as enduring as the difference made by Scots in the field of invention.

Melting Moments

A deliciously light biscuit enjoyed by many during afternoon tea.  Always a favourite with young and old alike.

Shortbread

Shortbread is forever associated with Scotland, probably due its presence at New year Celebrations.  But Scots enjoy this treat all year round.  There are many varied recipes for shortbread and you may add almonds, ginger, hazelnuts and cinnamon to your own taste.
