    The Highland cow is an ancient cattle breed.  The breed was developed in the Highlands and western coastal regions of Scotland. It is one of the oldest known breeds of cattle in the world, with records of its existence going as far back as the 12th century.


    The Red Deer is our largest deer species. It stands up to four and a half feet at the shoulder. The male is larger than the female. The colour of the coat is a red-brown. The male only grows antlers and these are shed yearly after the rut.


    The capercaillie is a cousin of the black grouse and is found in the Highlands of Scotland.  The male can reach up to thirty-five inches in length and weigh around twelve pounds. The female is much smaller and less than half the weight.The male capercaillie has black plumage with an iridescent blue and green gizzard and dark reddish-brown wings.


    The common seal is the most widespread of pinnipeds.  A pinniped is an aquatic, carnivorous mammal with all four limbs modified into flippers. Walruses and sea-lions are included in the group.   The male is larger than the female and may be up to six and a half feet in length.  He may weigh up to three hundred and seventy-five pounds.


    The golden eagle is the largest bird of prey in Scotland. It may reach  up to thirty-two inches in length and weigh up to eleven pounds.  The wingspan can reach up to seven feet.  The female is much larger than the male. The adult golden eagle is brown in colour with a paler brown head.
