Scotland is well known for its UFO sightings. A survey published in 2002 found that four times as many UFO's were spotted over Scotland every year as France or Italy.
Early one morning, a giant orb was seen hovering over the waters of Loch Linnhe in the 1980's. Bright orange lights were seen darting across the skies above Cumbernauld during the 1970's. But the area that records most sightings is Bonnybridge, near Falkirk. It's so renowned that it's referred to as the Falkirk Triangle.
The Bonnybridge phenomena started in 1979. A forestry worker called Bob Taylor claimed to have seen three spherical objects in the middle of the woods. The event happened at night on the 9th of November. He'd been walking through the woods situated near the M8 motorway and arrived at a clearing.
A giant sphere around twenty feet wide made of a dark, metallic material appeared before him. Two smaller spiked spheres dropped from the main one and rolled towards him. They attached themselves to his trouser legs and drew him towards the main sphere. When he arrived there, he was assaulted by an acrid stench and finally lost consciousness. When he woke up, he found he was unable to speak. He staggered home whereupon his wife phoned the police.
The police arrived and found the tale incredible. But as Taylor was a man of good repute, they visited the location and found strange marks like ladders on the ground where Taylor had said he'd seen the spheres. But the trail fell cold and the case remains open.
A theory offered states that Taylor may have been startled and he had an epileptic fit. But this is implausible as he'd never experienced such a fit before or after the sighting.
Craig Malcolm became another name associated with UFO's in Scotland. He has collated video footage of strange sightings over a six year period. One of his films shows light balls bouncing along the skyline.
Malcom's brother appeared at his door, ashen and breathless, in 1991. He said he had been chased by something. Keen to discover the cause of his brother's state, they both returned to the place where the event happened. They saw a figure of eight rotating through the sky. There was no sound. It was videoed and played back. Smaller objects were witnessed coming off the figure of eight and flying off in opposite directions.
Malcolm has witnessed over 180 unexplained phenomena since then. He has amassed over thirteen hours of footage. He dispatched the footage to the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence Institute in America for analysis. "The results was that 95% of the footage was UFO's and 5% was aircraft." he said. Though, some skeptics counter this result by claiming that the footage is due to Bonnybridge's close proximity to a gas-flaring terminal and three airports.
Nevertheless, there are over three hundred reported sightings a year in Bonnybridge. Why UFO's are drawn to this particular area is a mystery. Even the UFOlogists are stumped. Ron Halliday, a writer of numerous UFO books, believes that Bonnybridge may serve as a portal to another dimension but there's no proof to substantiate the claim.
