The Battle of Largs Date happened on the 1st October 1263. The protagonists were King Alexander III of Scotland and King Haakon of Norway. The Vikings had been attacking and raiding the outer isles of Scotland since the reign of King Kenneth MacAlpin. He reigned from 843 until 937.
By the 1260's, Alexander III was anxious to rid Scotland of the Vikings. He orchestrated a number of raids against the Vikings, and by 1263, they were left only with Orkney and Shetland. King Haakon, angered at having lost so much land to the Scots, set out to win it back.
He and his army landed at Largs on the 1st October. It is said that the Vikings removed their shoes in order that they could have an element of surprise. But unbeknownst to them, the Scots had slipped out after nightfall to place thistles on the beach. The cries of the Vikings as they stood on the thistles alerted the Scots to the impending onslaught.
The Scots immediately launched into a ferocious battle and attacked the Viking invaders. Fresh troops arrived for the Vikings during the battle, but despite this extra force, they were forced to retreat. Haakon had to ask for a truce in order to bury his dead. Soon after the burial, he left with the remains of his fleet and returned to Norway. The Largs Pencil is a monument to the Battle of Largs.
